What do you know about emergency contraception pill?
Emergency contraceptive pills, also known as morning after pill is a medicine to stop you from becoming pregnant after you’ve had unprotected sex or when a condom breaks during intercourse.
There is 2 different emergency contraceptive pill available. Postinor 2 – which is effective up to 72 hours after intercourse or Ella which is effective up to 120 hours after intercourse.
Although its called the morning after pill, this term is actually misleading. In reality, you don’t have to take it on the morning after sex but you should take it as soon as possible. The more quickly you take it, the better the chances it will work.
It very safe and can be taken as long as you are allergy to the medicine or have severe liver disease.
Most of our patients do not suffer from any side effect. However in the event that it does happen, it is usually very mild . Some of the potential side effects would be headache, nausea, abdominal, pelvic or back pain, muscle pains, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, breast tenderness, mild menstrual irregularity.
Some people worried that EC is a form of abortion, but this is not the case.
EC is a hormone pill which changes the environment of your womb so that either ovulation is stopped, or the lining of your womb becomes non receptive to an egg, making pregnancy not/less possible.
