Chlamydia remains one of the commonest sexual transmitted disease in Singapore. It can affect both men and women. World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that annually 131 million new cases occur worldwide, the majority of which remain asymptomatic.
It is usually passed through sexual intercourse be it vaginal or anal, where bodily fluids are passed from one person to another. It can also be transmitted thru oral sex as well.
Those at risk includes:
- Age <25 years
- Sexual partner who tested positive for Chlamydia
- Two or more partner sexual partners in preceding year
- A recent change in sexual partner
- Lack of consistent use of condoms
- Non- barrier contraception
- Infection with another sexual transmitted infection (STI)
Often the chlamydia infection causes no symptoms at all especially in women. And even if presents the symptom can be mild.

Painful Urination
Penile Discharge
Testicular Pain
Fever
Symptoms in women
Vaginal Discharge
Painful Urination
Vague Lower Abdominal Pain
Fever
In Between Period Pain or Painful Sex
Because Chlamydia often present with none to mild symptoms, it is advisable to consider investigation to rule out. Investigation involve either urine and/or swabs test.
Chlamydia is treatable and usually involve use of antibiotic. It is recommended that after treatment to undergo a post-eradication test to confirms that the infection is fully eradicated. This is usually done 3 weeks after the initial treatment.
